The scriptures show that the faithful had visions while dreaming, both the Bible and Book of Mormon, but what about those who have not even entered God’s true Church? Do these people get dreams that are like visions or at least spiritually generated?
Apparently they do.
A person does not have to be a Christian to receive spiritually based dreams. The focus or content of the dream will not be like the ones the faithful receive (as related in the scriptures), but spiritual none the less. In Acts 2:17 (King James Bible), God said that he will give dreams and prophesies to people in these latter-days. I can attest that this scripture is real and came true in my life. Dreams are either self-generated or spiritually generated by God or by demons.
I have had both a vision from God, (of the Holy Ghost) during my dream state and also got visited by demons who tried to cause harm. Whether from God or from evil, these spiritual dreams have distinctive characteristics that separate them from normal dreams created by ourselves. These simple characteristics are as follows:

These simple characteristics helps determine if the dream was self-generated to resolve matters, hash over problems, find ideas, etc, or if the dream was given by God (as in my Holy Ghost vision) or imposed by demons.
Yes, demons do affect us in our dreams and here are some of the things I have experienced.
- Feeling weakened, like the life force is being sucked out of me. This is because of their evil state, they are “dead” spiritually speaking. Spiritual life is gone from them. This is the effect of evil and darkness because they are condemned for all eternity to suffer. When they touch you (spiritually), feelings of dying or life leaving you are experienced.
- They can be seen to move in a broken succession, such as seeing the evil person to your left a distance away, then suddenly he/she is at your face staring you in your eyes. You cannot see the succession of movement. This is because of the difference in time. Their time is much slower than ours and the dimension they exist in operates differently than ours here in this world.
- A clear feeling something is wrong with them or wrong about the dream.
- They will appear as someone you know. This occurs because they cause you to think you see someone’s face you know, that that they change form.
- They can entice you to commit sin during the dream.
- They promote ill feelings toward someone or about something.
- Physical experiences are spiritually given, not temporally given, but the spiritual ones can translate into a real temporal result. Thus when half asleep, you may experience you are being lifted off the bed, where in this reality you are still lying in bed. Possession of your body is a different matter.
- Clear impressions remain after the dream experience and remain for hours, sometimes days, but dissipate over time.
- They attack your fears, hurts, pains etc. This is to weaken you, control you, impose their will over you and this imposition is leading you to make the wrong choices and wrong conclusions, it is not they control your thoughts and choices.
- Definite feelings, impressions and/or thoughts, during the dream, that this person is dark, evil, hallow, empty, angry, controlling, etc.
When Joseph Smith said, during his First Vision, darkness enveloped him and he felt he was going to die, that was a real spiritual experience from demons. I had similar experiences in my life before the LDS Church found me. In fact I still remember them.
These spiritual dreams are real. So real that one time I felt I was really in another place and that feeling remained after I awoke. Other times, I experienced demons who appeared as my Dad or another relative, but I knew they were not my family.
People who had similar experiences may think they are nightmares when visited by evil during their dreams. They certainly are like nightmares, but spiritually speaking they are real. Our own self-generated dream do not leave us so affected as do these spiritual dreams.
On the God sent side, spiritual dreams are quite lifting, enlightening. The dream vision I had of the Holy Ghost left me feeling peaceful, restful, lighter, for about three days. That is one difference between godly visitations versus evil visitations, the former leaves you in a peaceful state or content, but the latter left empty, hurt, not peaceful, etc.
Some have claimed their deceased relatives visited them in their dreams. I suggest you be very careful believing that. Not one person who dies has the power to visit you in your dreams. The exception are those who were priests of God as from the New Testament or Old Testament, these people are tasked to do more work for God and can be called angels or appear as such. Otherwise, us regular people, when passed on, have no power to access anyone still in this life.
God is one of order and to allow any person who has died to enter our dreams on their desire opens the door to wrong and bad influences and most of all opens the door to a lot of disorder in life, more so than just evil visiting you.
The only time a relative is seen in a dream is when you are taken by an angel, or the Holy Ghost, in the dream, to see your relative. Otherwise, they do not come to visit you. In saying that, pray for your relatives that have passed on, do not pray to them and most of all, do not try to believe you can summon them, even with any spiritualist media as Ouija boards, chants, beads, etc. That is idol worship and the only spirit that comes is a demon.
